Supplies You'll Need

  • Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
  • WD-40
  • Dawn dish soap
  • White cloths
  • Touch-up paint (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Try a Magic Eraser First

Dampen a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and gently rub the crayon marks. The micro-abrasive melamine foam removes crayon effectively. Use light pressure β€” Magic Erasers are mildly abrasive and can remove paint sheen, especially on flat/matte walls.

Magic Erasers can dull flat/matte paint finish. Test on a hidden spot first.

Apply WD-40 for Stubborn Crayon

Spray a small amount of WD-40 onto a white cloth (not directly on the wall) and rub the crayon marks gently. WD-40 dissolves the paraffin wax in crayons. Follow immediately with step 3 to remove the WD-40 residue.

Clean WD-40 Residue

Mix a small amount of Dawn dish soap in warm water. Wipe the treated area to remove all WD-40 residue (it’s petroleum-based and can attract dirt if left on the wall). Dry with a clean cloth.

Touch Up Paint if Needed

If the cleaning process has affected the paint sheen (especially on matte/flat walls), touch up with matching paint. Keep your paint color code saved for exactly this purpose.

What NOT to Do

Never use heavy solvents (acetone, paint thinner) on painted walls

Never scrub aggressively on flat/matte paint

Never use abrasive scrubbing pads on painted walls

If the Stain Persists

Extensive crayon damage across large wall areas may be more efficiently addressed by repainting the wall entirely rather than spot-treating each mark.
