Supplies You'll Need

  • Chlorine bleach or Clorox Tilex Mold & Mildew Remover
  • Stiff grout brush
  • Baking soda
  • Rubber gloves
  • Penetrating grout sealer
  • Spray bottle

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Ventilate the Area

Open windows and turn on the exhaust fan. If using bleach products, ensure cross-ventilation. Wear rubber gloves and consider a face mask if mold coverage is extensive.

2

Apply Bleach Solution to Grout

Mix 3/4 cup chlorine bleach per gallon of water, or use Clorox Tilex Mold & Mildew Remover spray directly on the grout. Bleach kills mold and breaks down the melanin pigment causing the black discoloration. For tile surfaces, spray and wipe. For grout lines, saturate and let sit.

Let Dwell and Scrub Grout

Let the bleach solution sit on the grout for 10–15 minutes. Then scrub grout lines with a stiff-bristled grout brush or old toothbrush. For stubborn mold deep in grout, make a paste of baking soda and bleach and apply to the lines.

Rinse Thoroughly

Rinse all tile and grout with clean water. Wipe tile surfaces with a clean cloth. Ensure no bleach residue remains, especially on colored grout.

Seal the Grout

Once grout is fully dry (24–48 hours), apply a penetrating grout sealer to prevent future mold growth. Sealed grout resists moisture absorption, making it much harder for mold to establish roots.

What NOT to Do

Never mix bleach with ammonia (produces toxic chloramine gas)

Never mix bleach with vinegar (produces toxic chlorine gas)

Never use bleach in an enclosed space without ventilation

Never paint over mold without killing and removing it first

If the Stain Persists

If mold covers more than 10 square feet, grows behind tile, or returns within weeks of treatment, there is likely a hidden moisture source (leaking pipe, poor ventilation, or waterproofing failure). Professional mold remediation is required.
