How to Remove Oil-Based Paint

Oil-based paints and stains that require solvents to remove. Much tougher than latex paint.

What Makes This Stain Tough

Oil-based paint doesn't mix with water at all โ€” you need mineral spirits, turpentine, or paint thinner to dissolve it. Work in a ventilated area and wear gloves. Dried oil paint may need to be scraped before treating with solvent.

General Tips for Oil-Based Paint Stains

Key tip: Act quickly and blot โ€” never rub. Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first.

Test first. Always test any cleaning solution on a hidden area before applying to the stain. Wait 5 minutes and check for discoloration or damage.
