Supplies You'll Need

  • Bar Keeper's Friend powder
  • Non-scratch sponge
  • Pumice stone (for toilets only)
  • Lemon juice (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Apply Bar Keeper's Friend

Wet the rust stain and sprinkle Bar Keeper's Friend (oxalic acid powder) directly onto it. Bar Keeper's Friend is the gold standard for rust on porcelain. Let it sit for 1 minute β€” do not let it dry on the surface.

1–2 minutes

Do not leave Bar Keeper's Friend on porcelain for more than a few minutes (can dull the glaze if left too long).

Scrub Gently

Using a soft sponge or non-scratch scrubbing pad, gently scrub the paste in circular motions. The oxalic acid converts iron oxide into a soluble iron salt that rinses away.

Rinse and Inspect

Rinse thoroughly with water. Inspect the stain β€” if rust remains, apply a second round. For stubborn rust, create a paste with lemon juice and Bar Keeper's Friend and let sit 5 minutes before scrubbing.

Toilet Bowl Rings: Pumice Stone

For rust rings in the toilet bowl, wet a pumice stone and gently rub the rust ring under the waterline. The pumice is softer than porcelain when wet and will not scratch. Keep both the stone and the surface wet at all times.

5–10 minutes

ONLY use pumice stones on toilets β€” they will scratch sink porcelain.

What NOT to Do

Never use bleach on rust (it sets the stain)

Never use pumice on porcelain sinks (scratches the surface)

Never use steel wool on porcelain (permanent scratches)

Never leave acidic cleaners sitting on porcelain for extended periods

If the Stain Persists

Deep rust staining from years of iron-rich water may have etched the porcelain glaze. If Bar Keeper's Friend and pumice cannot remove the stain, the glaze may be damaged and professional refinishing is an option.

Persistent rust stains that resist home treatment may indicate damaged porcelain glaze or water quality issues. Beyond Clean Team can assess the damage and recommend the best restoration approach. Schedule your bathroom refresh today.

Prevention Tips

Fix leaky faucets that drip onto porcelain (rust forms from iron in water)

Install a water softener or iron filter if your water has high iron content

Wipe down sinks after use to prevent mineral deposit buildup

Replace rusty drain hardware promptly
