How to Remove Blood Stains from a Mattress
Professional step-by-step instructions for removing blood from mattress. Includes supplies, timing, and safety warnings.
Caution
Heat permanently sets protein stains like blood into mattress fibers and foam. Always use cold water on blood stains. Once heat-set, blood stains are nearly impossible to remove.
Supplies You'll Need
- Cold water
- 3% hydrogen peroxide
- Enzyme cleaner (OxiClean, Zout)
- Baking soda
- White cloths and towels
- Vacuum
Step-by-Step Instructions
Blot with Cold Water
Dampen a white cloth with COLD water and blot the blood stain. Cold water dissolves fresh blood; hot water cooks the protein and sets it permanently. Work from the outside edge inward.
NEVER use hot water on blood β heat denatures hemoglobin and permanently sets the stain.
Apply Hydrogen Peroxide
Pour a small amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide directly on the blood stain. It will bubble and fizz as it breaks down the hemoglobin. Let it fizz for 5 minutes, then blot with a clean cloth. Repeat 2β3 times until fizzing stops.
Apply Enzyme Cleaner for Remaining Stain
For any remaining discoloration, apply an enzyme cleaner formulated for protein stains. The protease enzyme breaks down hemoglobin protein bonds. Let it work for 15 minutes.
Blot Dry and Apply Baking Soda
Blot the area as dry as possible with clean towels. Cover with baking soda to absorb remaining moisture. Let sit 4β8 hours, then vacuum.
What NOT to Do
Never use hot water or steam on blood stains
Never oversaturate the mattress (mold risk)
Never use bleach on a mattress surface
If the Stain Persists
Large or old blood stains that have deeply penetrated mattress foam may be beyond DIY treatment. If the stain covers more than 1 square foot or has been set by heat, professional mattress cleaning is recommended.
