How to Remove Pet Urine from a Mattress

Supplies You'll Need
- Clean white towels (several)

Step-by-Step Instructions
Strip Bedding and Blot
Remove all sheets and bedding immediately (wash separately with enzyme detergent). Blot the mattress with clean white towels, pressing firmly to absorb as much urine as possible. Do not rub.
Saturate with Enzyme Cleaner
Apply enzyme cleaner (Nature's Miracle or Rocco & Roxie) directly to the stain. Use enough to penetrate to the depth the urine reached inside the mattress, but avoid oversaturation. Let it soak for 15 minutes.
Blot Out the Cleaner
Press clean dry towels firmly into the mattress to absorb the enzyme solution and dissolved urine. Stand on the towels for maximum pressure. Repeat with fresh towels until minimal moisture transfers.
Apply Baking Soda Generously
Cover the entire affected area with a thick layer of baking soda (at least 1/4 inch). The baking soda will continue absorbing moisture from deep within the mattress and neutralize remaining odor. Leave for 8–24 hours.
Vacuum and Verify
Vacuum all baking soda thoroughly using an upholstery attachment. Smell the area closely — if any odor remains, repeat the enzyme treatment and baking soda application. Use a UV blacklight to verify full removal.
What NOT to Do
Never steam clean a mattress with urine (heat sets the stain and odor permanently)
Never use bleach on a mattress (toxic fumes in sleeping area, damages foam)
Never sleep on a damp mattress (mold risk)
Never flip the mattress to avoid the stain (urine spreads deeper)
