How to Remove Coffee Stains from Marble and Natural Stone
Professional step-by-step instructions for removing coffee from natural stone (marble / limestone). Includes supplies, timing, and safety warnings.
Dangerous Combination
Acid etches calcium carbonate in marble, limestone, and travertine, causing permanent dull spots (etch marks) that cannot be cleaned away β only polished out professionally. This damage is instant and irreversible.
Do NOT proceed with this treatment.
Dangerous Combination
Steam forces moisture into natural stone pores and can cause thermal shock, leading to surface cracking, discoloration, and weakened stone structure over time.
Do NOT proceed with this treatment.
Supplies You'll Need
- pH-neutral stone cleaner
- 12% hydrogen peroxide
- Baking soda or diatomaceous earth
- Plastic wrap and painters tape
- Plastic scraper
- Penetrating stone sealer
Step-by-Step Instructions
Blot Immediately
Blot spilled coffee immediately with a soft cloth. Do not wipe β wiping spreads the stain across the stone surface. Marble absorbs colored liquids rapidly, so every second counts.
Clean with pH-Neutral Stone Cleaner
Clean the area with a pH-neutral stone cleaner (StoneTech or Granite Gold Stone & Tile) and a soft cloth. Do NOT use vinegar, lemon, or any acidic cleaner β acid etches marble permanently.
NEVER use acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon, bathroom cleaners) on marble or limestone.
Prepare a Poultice for Set Stains
If a stain remains, prepare a poultice: mix 12% hydrogen peroxide with baking soda or diatomaceous earth until you have a thick paste (like peanut butter consistency). For oil-based stains, use acetone instead of hydrogen peroxide.
Apply and Cover the Poultice
Spread the poultice over the stain in a 1/2-inch thick layer extending 1 inch beyond the stain edges. Cover with plastic wrap and tape the edges. The poultice draws the stain out of the stone as it dries. Leave for 24β48 hours.
Remove Poultice and Assess
Remove the plastic and let the poultice dry completely on the stone. Once dry, scrape off gently with a plastic scraper and wipe with a damp cloth. If the stain has lightened but remains visible, repeat the poultice treatment (may require 2β3 applications).
Seal the Stone
After the stain is removed, apply a penetrating stone sealer to prevent future staining. Well-sealed marble is significantly more resistant to coffee, wine, and other stains.
What NOT to Do
Never use acidic cleaners on marble (vinegar, lemon, CLR, most bathroom cleaners)
Never use bleach or ammonia on natural stone
Never scrub marble with abrasive pads (scratches the polished surface)
Never use generic countertop spray on marble
If the Stain Persists
If the stain has deeply penetrated the marble, or if etching (dull spots from acid exposure) has occurred alongside the stain, professional stone restoration including poultice treatment, honing, and polishing is recommended.
Marble stains require specialized knowledge β the wrong cleaner causes permanent damage. Beyond Clean Teamβs stone care specialists use professional-grade poultice treatments and sealers to restore your marble. Protect your investment β schedule your stone care service.
Prevention Tips
Seal marble countertops every 6β12 months (water drop test to check sealant)
Use coasters under all beverages on marble surfaces
Wipe up spills immediately β even water can leave marks on unsealed marble
Use trivets and placemats to protect marble from heat and scratches
