Dangerous Combination

Chlorine bleach permanently removes dye from colored carpet fibers, creating an irreversible light spot that cannot be re-dyed at home. The damage is instant and permanent.

Supplies You'll Need

  • Baking soda or cornstarch
  • Dawn Original dish soap
  • Rubbing alcohol (70%)
  • White cloths
  • Vacuum

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Absorb Excess Oil

Sprinkle a thick layer of baking soda or cornstarch over the grease stain. These powders absorb oil from carpet fibers. Let sit 15–30 minutes, then vacuum thoroughly.

Apply Dawn Dish Soap

Apply a few drops of Dawn Original dish soap (the blue one β€” it is a powerful degreaser) directly to the stain. Work it in gently with your fingers or a soft brush. Dawn is used to clean oil off wildlife for a reason β€” it emulsifies grease extremely well.

Blot with Warm Water

Dampen a white cloth with warm water and blot the soapy area to work the soap through the fibers and lift the emulsified grease. Repeat with fresh warm water cloths until no more grease transfers.

Apply Rubbing Alcohol for Stubborn Grease

If a dark spot remains, apply rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl) on a white cloth and dab the stain. Alcohol dissolves the remaining grease that soap could not emulsify.

Rinse and Dry

Rinse with cold water to remove all soap residue (leftover soap attracts dirt). Blot dry and fan-dry the area.

What NOT to Do

Never use water first on grease (it spreads the oil before it’s emulsified)

Never iron carpet to try to lift grease (melts synthetic fibers)

Never use bleach on grease stains (ineffective and damages carpet)

If the Stain Persists

Large or old grease stains that have wicked into the carpet pad require professional hot water extraction with commercial degreasers.
