How to Remove Chewing Gum from Synthetic Carpet
Professional step-by-step instructions for removing chewing gum from synthetic carpet. Includes supplies, timing, and safety warnings.
Dangerous Combination
Chlorine bleach permanently removes dye from colored carpet fibers, creating an irreversible light spot that cannot be re-dyed at home. The damage is instant and permanent.
Do NOT proceed with this treatment.
Supplies You'll Need
- Bag of ice cubes or frozen gel pack
- Butter knife or spoon
- Rubbing alcohol (70%)
- Dawn dish soap
- White cloths and towels
Step-by-Step Instructions
Freeze the Gum with Ice
Place a bag of ice cubes or a frozen gel pack directly on the gum for 10โ15 minutes. This hardens the gum and makes it brittle so you can chip it off without it stretching and spreading.
Scrape Off the Frozen Gum
Once the gum is hard and brittle, use a butter knife or spoon to chip and scrape it off the carpet fibers. Work carefully to avoid cutting carpet fibers. Most of the gum should come off in solid pieces.
Remove Residue with Rubbing Alcohol
Apply rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl) to a white cloth and dab any remaining gum residue. The alcohol dissolves the sticky polymer. Blot and rotate to a clean cloth section. Repeat until no more sticky residue remains.
Clean with Dish Soap
Mix 1 teaspoon Dawn dish soap with 1 cup warm water. Apply to the area and blot to clean up any remaining residue and alcohol. This also removes any stickiness left behind.
Rinse and Dry
Rinse with cold water and blot dry. Inspect the carpet fibers โ they should feel clean and non-sticky. Fan-dry the area.
What NOT to Do
Never pull or stretch warm gum (makes the problem much worse)
Never use peanut butter on carpet (old myth that creates a grease stain)
Never cut carpet fibers to remove gum โ use the freeze method instead
If the Stain Persists
If gum has been ground into the carpet by foot traffic and covers a large area, or if DIY methods have left a sticky residue, professional treatment can fully restore the carpet.
