Dangerous Combination

Chlorine bleach permanently removes dye from colored carpet fibers, creating an irreversible light spot that cannot be re-dyed at home. The damage is instant and permanent.

Supplies You'll Need

  • Spoon or butter knife
  • Dawn dish soap
  • 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • Cold water
  • White cloths and towels

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Scrape Off Excess Sauce

Use a spoon or butter knife to scoop up as much sauce as possible. Scrape gently from outside edges toward the center. Don't press the sauce deeper into the carpet.

Blot with Cold Water

Apply cold water to the stain and blot with white cloths. Cold water helps dilute the sauce and prevent the red pigment from setting. Don't rub β€” blot only.

Apply Dish Soap Solution

Mix 1 tablespoon Dawn dish soap with 2 cups cold water. Apply to the stain and blot. Dawn cuts through the oil component of the sauce. Repeat until no more red-orange color transfers to your cloth.

Apply Hydrogen Peroxide for Red Pigment

If an orange-red tint remains, apply 3% hydrogen peroxide directly to the stain. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes. Hydrogen peroxide is very effective on the red tomato pigment. Blot clean.

10–15 minutes

Test hydrogen peroxide on a hidden area first. It can lighten some carpet colors.

What NOT to Do

Never use hot water on tomato sauce stains (bakes the red pigment in)

Never rub the stain (spreads the sauce and pushes oil deeper)

Never use bleach on colored carpet

If the Stain Persists

Tomato sauce stains that have dried and been heat-set (through steam cleaning or hot water) may need professional treatment to remove the baked-in red pigment.

Tomato sauce stains that resist home treatment need professional extraction with specialized spotting agents. Beyond Clean Team can remove even set tomato stains. Schedule your cleaning today.
