How to Remove Red Wine from Synthetic Carpet
Professional step-by-step instructions for removing red wine from synthetic carpet. Includes supplies, timing, and safety warnings.
Dangerous Combination
Chlorine bleach permanently removes dye from colored carpet fibers, creating an irreversible light spot that cannot be re-dyed at home. The damage is instant and permanent.
Do NOT proceed with this treatment.
Supplies You'll Need
- White paper towels or cloths
- Club soda or cold water
- Dawn dish soap
- White vinegar
- 3% hydrogen peroxide
- OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover
Step-by-Step Instructions
Blot Immediately
Blot from the outside edge inward with white paper towels or cloths. Do not rub β rubbing spreads the wine and pushes it deeper. Absorb as much wine as possible before applying any treatment.
Apply Club Soda or Cold Water
Pour a small amount of club soda (or cold water) onto the stain and blot again. The carbonation helps lift pigment from the fibers. Repeat 2β3 times.
Apply Dish Soap and Hydrogen Peroxide Solution
Mix 1 tablespoon of Dawn dish soap with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and 2 cups of warm water. Apply to the stain and blot. For stubborn stains, mix 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide with 1 part Dawn dish soap and apply directly β this is the most effective combination for red wine on carpet.
Test hydrogen peroxide on a hidden carpet area first. It can lighten some carpet dyes.
Rinse and Blot Dry
Rinse the area with cold water to remove all cleaning solution residue. Blot dry with clean towels. Residual soap left in carpet attracts dirt and creates a dark spot over time.
Apply OxiClean for Stubborn Remaining Color
If a faint pink stain remains, dissolve 1 scoop of OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover in 1 cup of warm water. Apply to the stain, cover with a damp white towel, and let sit for 1β4 hours. Blot dry.
What NOT to Do
Never scrub red wine (spreads the stain dramatically)
Never use hot water on wine stains (heat sets tannins permanently)
Never wait until tomorrow to treat (oxidation makes removal exponentially harder)
Never use bleach on colored carpet
If the Stain Persists
If the red wine stain has dried for more than 24 hours, or covers a large area (more than 2 square feet), professional hot water extraction with professional-grade spotting agents will significantly improve results.
