Supplies You'll Need

  • Butter knife or stiff brush
  • Vacuum
  • Dawn dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • White cloths

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Let the Mud Dry Completely

This is counterintuitive, but do NOT try to clean wet mud. Let it dry completely (2–4 hours or overnight). Wet mud smears and pushes deeper into carpet fibers. Dried mud becomes powdery and vacuums up easily.

2–4 hours passive (let it dry)

Resist the urge to clean wet mud β€” it makes the stain much worse.

2

Break Up and Vacuum Dried Mud

Once fully dry, break up the dried mud with a butter knife or stiff brush. Vacuum thoroughly on the highest suction setting, making multiple passes from different directions.

3

Treat Remaining Discoloration

If a brown stain remains after vacuuming, mix 1 tablespoon Dawn dish soap with 2 cups warm water. Apply with a cloth and blot. For clay-heavy mud, add 1 tablespoon white vinegar to the solution.

What NOT to Do

Never clean wet mud (let it dry first)

Never rub wet mud into carpet fibers

Never use a steam cleaner on fresh mud (pushes particles deeper)
